PCI Proud Supporter in America’s PrepareAthon; April 30th National Day of Action

CHICAGO - In recognition of America’s “PrepareAthon!” on April 30, the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) is conducting a tornado drill and encouraging other individuals, businesses and organizations to participate in activities that increase emergency preparedness and resilience.

America’s PrepareAthon! is a national community-based campaign coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to increase readiness through hazard-specific drills, group discussions, and exercises. Held every spring and fall, the PrepareAthon encourages Americans across the country to practice preparedness actions before a disaster or emergency strikes.

“PCI is proud to participate in the national day of action and to help educate policyholders on the importance of being prepared in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency,” said Marguerite Tortorello, senior vice president of public affairs for PCI.

However, according to FEMA’s 2012 National Survey, only 46 percent of respondents believed that a natural disaster will occur in their community. Even more concerning, is that nearly 70 percent of Americans have not participated in a preparedness drill or exercise in the past two years.

“In just a matter of moments a natural disaster can devastate a community and destroy a families most treasured possessions,” said Tortorello. “This is why it is so important to not only have an emergency kit and plan prepared, but to take action by practicing your response plan on a periodic basis. There is no better offense, than a good defense – and having a plan is a great way to defend your family, yourself, and your belongings from natural disasters. Part of that plan includes talking with your insurance agent or company. The insurance industry is well prepared to meet the needs of policyholders whether it is an isolated claim or restoring communities following the next natural disaster. Insurance.”

FEMA PrepareAthon Tips:

-Understand which disasters could happen in your community;

-Know what to do to be safe and mitigate damage;

-Practice drills and share information to better prepare your employees, affiliates, and the communities you serve; and

-Participate in community resilience planning.
