PCI, NOAA, FEMA, and State Auto Highlight Social Media Impact on Disaster Response during Social Media Week in Chicago

CHICAGO – Social media is changing the way Americans prepare for and respond to natural disasters and on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 9 a.m. in the North Hall of the Willis Tower, 82nd floor, as part of Chicago Social Media Week, the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) is leading an important session focusing on the important role social media plays saving lives, reducing damage and aiding emergency responders when disasters occur.

Representatives from the National Weather Service in Chicago, FEMA, State Auto Insurance Company, and PCI will highlight recent severe weather events and how they are using social media to connect with individuals and provide valuable real-time information to save lives and enhance disaster response efforts.  The free session, “Hurricanes, Wildfires, and Tornadoes! Oh My! Social Media at the Center of Nat Cats” is one of the topics exploring how social media is transforming the world during Social Media Week (SMW) Chicago September 22-26, 2014.

“PCI is honored to speak at Social Media Week and lead the discussion regarding the positive impact social media can have in disaster preparedness and aiding in the recovery process,” said Marguerite Tortorello, senior vice president Public Affairs for PCI. “Our goal is to continue educating the public on the value of being prepared for life changing severe weather events, and the important role social media plays in enhancing public readiness. As a partner in NOAA’s Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative, PCI is committed to working with NOAA and other ambassadors to strengthen national resilience against extreme weather. We place a high priority on advancing activities that encourage individuals, businesses, and communities to prepare for severe weather and other emergencies. Through our strong social media presence, we emphasize the importance of being physically, as well as financially, prepared for catastrophic events and emergencies.”

Recent events highlight the use of social media to disseminate vital information in real time, as both consumers, insurers, and emergency authorities use the technology to keep the flow of information active and viable. The Moore, Oklahoma tornadoes generated more than 2 million tweets within 48 hours that helped provide vital information on the impact and magnitude of the event and helped coordinate volunteers, donations and resources.
