  • Affinity Group Programs Benefit Californians and Promote Auto Insurance Affordability
  • Corrected: New first paragraph

SACRAMENTO, Calif — The following statement by Mark Sektnan, vice president for the American Property Casualty Insurance Association, is in response to questions about the role of affinity group programs in the auto insurance marketplace.

“Affinity groups give millions of Californians access to more affordable auto insurance.

“At last week’s public hearing, the department heard from a teachers’ union, numerous community groups, small businesses and leading social justice groups who stressed how important these affinity programs are to their members. They asked the department not to restrict or inhibit affinity group auto insurance plans because that action will take away discounts that many hard-working Californians depend on.  The groups stressed that any changes made should seek to expand affinity programs, so more Californians can share in this opportunity.

“Over the last 30 years, a wide range of organizations have formed and benefited from affinity groups including labor unions, teachers, small business owners and their employees, fire fighters, law enforcement, among hundreds of others.  If affinity groups are restricted, millions of California drivers already in these programs could be forced to pay more for auto insurance.  If changes are to be made, more affinity groups should be created to encourage greater access.”
